Every conversion that a browser can do well runs on your device: PDF to images, text and Markdown, images to PDF, PDF/A, grayscale and all image formats. Those are free without limit and your file never leaves your computer. Conversions that need a full office suite, an OCR engine or a browser engine – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OCR, web pages, e-books – run on our server. Each costs real processing time, which is why free accounts get five of them a day and Premium pays for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Which conversions run in the browser?

PDF to JPG, PNG, WebP, text and Markdown; images (including HEIC) to PDF; PDF to PDF/A and grayscale; and all image-to-image conversions. They use pdf.js, Ghostscript and libheif compiled to WebAssembly.

Which conversions run on the server, and why?

PDF to Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Office documents, HTML, web pages and e-books to PDF; EPUB and MOBI; and OCR. They need LibreOffice, Calibre, a browser engine or Tesseract, which are too large to run in a web page.

How good is PDF to Word?

Text-based PDFs convert well. Choose flowing text if you want to edit, exact layout if the look must match. Scanned PDFs are images – run OCR first, then convert.

Is there a watermark?

Never. Not on free results, not on Premium.

How long are files kept?

Server uploads and results are deleted one hour after the job finishes. Browser tools never send anything.

What is the free limit?

Five server conversions per day, resetting at midnight UTC, with files up to 10 MB and OCR up to 20 pages. Browser tools have no limit. If you hit the limit you can wait, use a browser alternative where one exists, or go Premium.

Which OCR languages are supported?

More than 100, from English, German, French and Spanish to Japanese, Hindi, Arabic and Chinese. Pick up to three per document.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Remove the password first, convert, then protect the result again on pdfprotection.io.
